The Sound Lounge on Sutton High Street will open on Christmas Day to serve a free Christmas dinner to anyone who is alone or hard-up.

The community music venue announced the meal on Monday 26 October, saying it was already being asked about it. “Christmas Day can be the hardest of all,” it said.

Full every year, running regardless

On 29 October the Sound Lounge said that people had been asking whether they could donate. “Every year we are full to capacity,” it said, so book early.

The meal is for the people the venue already knows: guests it sees once a year at Christmas, regulars at its weekly Community Kitchen, and anyone who drops by when they need to. It says it will run the day “regardless”, but donations make it easier.

How you can help

The venue has asked for three things:

  • Pay for a meal. Donations go through the link in the Sound Lounge’s Instagram profile.
  • Give a toy for a child’s Santa sack. New or good-as-new only: “Please don’t give anything broken or tatty looking,” the venue says, because it wants the children to feel special.
  • Volunteer on the day. Get in touch through the same email or phone number.

What it means for you

  • If you, a neighbour or a relative would otherwise spend Christmas Day alone, this is a warm, free meal in the town centre. You can book on someone’s behalf.
  • Book soon. The venue says it fills every year, and the announcement went out two months early.
  • Plan the journey. No trains run on Christmas Day, so plan how you will get there. Our Sutton Christmas travel guide has the detail, and other events are in our what’s on guide.
