Sutton's October food hygiene ratings were the best of 2026: 30 of 32 were a 5. One Cheam shop got a 1, and a late September result added a 2 in Worcester Park.
October was the best month of the year for food hygiene in Sutton. The Food Standards Agency register holds 32 ratings for the borough dated October, and 30 of them are the top score of 5. (Food Standards Agency register, read 2 November 2026)
That is 93.8% at a 5. The previous high for 2026 was June, at 83.7%.
Only one October rating is below a 3, the score the agency calls “generally satisfactory”. The other was a 3.
Month by month
| Month inspected | Ratings | Rated 5 | Share rated 5 | Below 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 55 | 41 | 74.5% | 1 |
| February | 78 | 61 | 78.2% | 2 |
| March | 76 | 55 | 72.4% | 1 |
| April | 54 | 38 | 70.4% | 3 |
| May | 56 | 37 | 66.1% | 4 |
| June | 49 | 41 | 83.7% | 1 |
| July | 45 | 30 | 66.7% | 3 |
| August | 39 | 16 | 41.0% | 7 |
| September | 58 | 45 | 77.6% | 1 |
| October | 32 | 30 | 93.8% | 1 |
Two cautions on these figures. The register shows only each business’s current rating, so a business inspected twice this year counts only in its latest month. And results reach the register some days after the visit, so October’s total will grow. September grew from 49 ratings when we last read the register, on 5 October, to 58 now.
The two October ratings below a 5
| Rating | Business | Address | Rated |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Costcutter | 285 Malden Road, Cheam SM3 8ET | 5 October 2026 |
| 3 | The Chef Restaurant | 74 Central Road, Worcester Park KT4 8HX | 4 October 2026 |
The Costcutter on Malden Road was scored 15 for hygienic food handling, 10 for the condition of the building and 20 for confidence in management. In this scheme a higher score is a worse result, and 20 is the top of the management scale.
September’s late results added one score below a 3. Classic Wok, 26 Central Road, Worcester Park, was rated a 2 on 9 September. It was not on the register when we read it on 5 October.
Who got a 5 in October
The 30 top scores run from pubs to care homes. Among them:
- O’Neills, 37 High Street, Sutton
- Shahs Halal Food, 292 High Street, Sutton, whose late-night licence decision we reported in October
- takeaways Checkers, 128 Central Road, Worcester Park, Taksim Kebab House, 49 Stafford Road, Wallington, and Equinox Fishbar, 15 Ross Parade, Wallington
- restaurants La Bella Luna, 23 Cheam Common Road, Worcester Park, and Greekland, 55 Lind Road, Sutton
- Village Bakers, 3 Lower Road, Sutton, and the Sainsbury’s at 2 Stafford Road, Wallington
- the Barista & Baker cafe at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Sutton Sports Village cafe at Rosehill Recreation Ground
- every kitchen inspected at the Stanley Park schools in Carshalton: the infant school, the junior school canteen, the after-school club and Busy Bees Bumbles
- three care homes: Elmglade Home in North Cheam, Heathcotes Dawson House in Carshalton and Park Hill House in Wallington
New names waiting for a first inspection
The register also lists businesses that have registered with the council but have not yet been inspected. Forty Sutton premises are in that state, down from 42 a month ago. Recent additions include:
- Oak and Anchor, 60-62 High Street, Sutton
- Tasty Roots, 304 High Street, Sutton
- Coffee Zone, the Platform 1 cafe at Sutton station
- Cuppa Coffee Cafe, 22 Gander Green Lane, Sutton
A registration is not an opening date. It tells you a food business has told the council it is coming.
What has not changed
- The two zeros are still zeros. Best One, 352 Middleton Road, Carshalton (21 July 2026), and Favour Chicken Burger And Ribs, 50 Stafford Road, Wallington (25 February 2026), have not been re-rated.
- August’s two 1s stand. Joe Sushi, 8 Station Way, Cheam, and Best One, 213 Carshalton Road, Carshalton, still show the results of their late August inspections.
- The oldest low rating is older. St Peter’s News, 145 Epsom Road, has held a 1 since 12 September 2023. That is 1,147 days.
- Nine below-3 ratings are more than a year old, the same number as last month.
Across the borough, 40 premises are now below a 3: two on a 0, 15 on a 1 and 23 on a 2. That is down from 43 on 5 October.
The register covers 1,324 premises. Of the 1,176 with a numeric rating, 889 hold a 5, or 75.6%, up from 74.9% a month ago.
What it means for you
- Check the date as well as the number. An October 5 tells you far more than a 2023 score.
- Check shops too. This month’s only score below a 3 went to a convenience store, as six of August’s seven did.
- A rating is one inspection. The FSA says a business can appeal within 21 days if it thinks a rating is wrong or unfair.
- Businesses can ask for a re-visit once they have made improvements, and can publish a right to reply alongside their rating at any time. (FSA safeguards for businesses)
Every figure here comes from the Food Standards Agency’s published register for the London Borough of Sutton, downloaded in full on 2 November 2026. Ratings record one inspection on one date and may have changed since. Any business named may appeal, request a re-visit or publish a right to reply, and we will update this page if a rating listed here changes.
