Sutton Christmas Lights: 2026 Switch-On Not Yet Set

Sutton’s Christmas lights switch-on has not been announced for 2026. Nothing has been published by Successful Sutton, the business improvement district that owns and runs the event, and the council’s own Christmas page is currently offline.

That matters, because three separate pages on the organiser’s website still advertise switch-ons that happened years ago, and they read as though they are current. This page sets out what actually happened in each of the last two years, what the pattern says about the 2026 date, and where the announcement will appear when it lands.

What happened in 2025

The BID published its festive programme on 4 November 2025 under the heading “Its Christmas!”. It listed a Sutton High Street Christmas Celebration running from Friday 28 November to Sunday 30 November 2025, with the note that “Christmas fun begins at 4pm on Friday 28th” (Successful Sutton, Its Christmas!).

The BID’s write-up afterwards, posted on 3 December 2025, records what the weekend actually involved:

• Over 40 Sutton based businesses in a market that ran on the Friday and the Sunday, selling street food, decorations and crafts
• Stage performances hosted by Dave Goodings and Radio St Helier, with Wayne Woodward, St Elphege’s School Choir, Kazoom, Elvis, Xpression Dance and Sutton Community Dance
• The lights switched on by the Deputy Mayor of Sutton, the Sutton and Cheam Rotary Santa and Pete, the Crystal Palace Eagle
• Lights supplied by Field and Lawn and Gala Lights, and the tree by Pine and Needles

What happened in 2024, and why it is worth knowing

The year before, the BID was unusually blunt about the format. Its 2024 programme, also published on 4 November, gave the date as Friday 29 November 2024, 4pm to 9pm, with things starting from 4.30pm at Trinity Square and in Manor Park, and then said in capitals:

“PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO MAIN HIGH STREET SWITCH ON EVENT. THE MAYOR AND DEPUTY MAYOR WILL BE LIGHTING THE TREE IN MANOR PARK AT 5PM AND YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US IN THE CELEBRATION!”

So the thing people search for as “the Sutton lights switch-on” has, in recent years, been a High Street celebration with a market, fairground rides and stage acts, plus a tree lighting in Manor Park, rather than a single countdown moment on a main stage. The 2024 page also recorded a Christmas market on the ground floor of Times Square shopping centre from Saturday 30 November, every Saturday and Sunday until Christmas week, 10am to 4pm, and a “Win the Window” competition with more than £1,000 in prizes for shoppers spending £5 locally.

Three pages that will send you to the wrong date

If you search for this event, you are likely to land on one of these first. All three are live on the organiser’s own site as of 3 September 2026:

The 2023 listing is the one search engines rank highest, and its start and end times are recorded on the page itself as 25 November 2023. Treat any date you read there as historic until the BID publishes a new one.

The council’s page, “Christmas lights and shopping local” at sutton.gov.uk, is indexed in search results but returns “Access denied. Sorry, you do not have access to this page” when you open it, checked on 3 September 2026. So there is no council listing to fall back on either.

When the 2026 date should appear

Both of the last two programmes went live in the first week of November, on 4 November in each case. On the pattern of the last two years, the celebration falls on the last Friday of November, which in 2026 is Friday 27 November, and runs into the weekend.

That is a projection from two years of the organiser’s own dates, not an announcement. We will replace it with the confirmed date as soon as Successful Sutton publishes one, and the place to watch is the Successful Sutton news page.

Getting there and parking

The top of Sutton High Street is pedestrianised, so the event space itself is not one you can drive into. The council runs two multi-storey car parks in the town centre, at Times Square and Gibson Road, and both sit within a couple of minutes’ walk of the High Street. Sunday rates in the multi-storeys are much cheaper than weekdays, which matters if the market weekend repeats. Full tariffs, permit rules and penalty charges are on our Sutton parking page.

Sutton station is a short walk from the southern end of the High Street. Questions people ask

Is the Sutton Christmas lights switch-on free? Yes. Nothing published by the BID for 2024 or 2025 carried an entrance fee for the High Street celebration. Individual attractions such as the St Nicholas Centre grotto and fairground rides are paid separately.

Who pays for Sutton’s Christmas lights? Successful Sutton, the town centre business improvement district, funded by a levy on town centre businesses. The lamp post lights have in past years been designed by local children through the BID’s “Design a Christmas Light” competition.
