Nine points from three games, six goals scored and one conceded, plus a shootout win over Leicester under-21s. Next at home: Wealdstone, Monday 31 August, 3pm.
Sutton United have won their first three National League games of the season. The club has scored six goals and conceded one.
The next home game is against Wealdstone on Bank Holiday Monday, 31 August, kicking off at 3pm at the Borough Sports Ground on Gander Green Lane. (Sutton United)
The three wins are:
- Woking 0-3 Sutton United, away, 8 August. Goals from Will Nightingale, Omar Mussa and David Ogbonna (match report)
- Sutton United 1-0 Altrincham, 15 August. Ogbonna scored again (match report)
- Sutton United 2-1 Hartlepool United, 22 August, in front of 1,834 people. Temi Babalola and Emmanuel Osadebe scored in the first half (match report)
The win over Hartlepool put Sutton second in the table, level on nine points with Southend United after three games. The club’s own report on the Altrincham game noted that it was Sutton’s first run of successive wins since the start of February.
The penalty win over Leicester
Between the Altrincham and Hartlepool games, Sutton played Leicester City in the National League Cup on Tuesday 18 August. The match finished 0-0 and Sutton won the shootout 3-1.
Goalkeeper Chris Haigh saved two Leicester penalties. Emmanuel Osadebe, Jermaine Francis and Temi Babalola scored theirs. Leicester had a full back sent off after 65 minutes for a challenge on Charlie Bell, and played the rest of the tie with ten men. (Sutton United match report)
The Leicester side was an under-21 team. The National League Cup pairs 16 National League clubs with 16 Premier League 2 under-21 sides, in four groups of eight. The top two in each group reach the quarter-finals, and National League clubs keep all the gate receipts. (Premier League)
Sutton are in Group D with the under-21 teams of Leicester City, Birmingham City, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. All four of Sutton’s group games are at home. A draw is worth a point, and the shootout winner takes an extra one, so Sutton have two points from the Leicester tie.
